Sunday the 8th of May 2011 saw clubs from Bull Bay, Pwhelli, Aberdyfi and Mochras roll into Porthmadog, getting the WSRA Northern League season underway. The Ladies started proceedings around 10:30am against a strong tide and wind. Porthmadog came home first in the ladies after a full on battle with Aberdyfi for half the race. Aberdyfi took the spoils in the Ladies Vets category.
Next into action came the men’s crews. At this stage the swell was increasing, as was the wind, so the decision was made to shorten the course to buoy #10. Bull Bay seemed to cope best with the ailments taking the mens title, Pwhelli took the senior vets spoils and of course Porthmadog took the Supervets title.
Unfortunately, no junior crews turned up, so after a short break everyone was back in the boats for the mixed race. Again due to increased wind and swell the course was shortened, but battling mother nature proved to be exhilarating for all involved, with hugh smiles all round on their return. Porthmadog took the trophy here once more, with Aberdyfi taking the mixed vets title.
Well done to everyone who took part and organised the day’s events, especially the safety boat crew and all the coxes, who had their work cut out and subsequently lost their voices the following days. Everyone enjoyed their day and of course Maxine’s chocolate cake was the raffle prize everyone wanted.
